Maltby Street

There is simply no better place to be in the South East on a Saturday. The hum of Maltby Street is hidden by the surrounding roads, housing blocks and railway lines but follow your nose and you will find it. Nestled alongside the London Bridge railway line, the street is strewn with bunting and individual food stalls are framed within a crumbling brick arch. You won’t find an amateur amongst them, all passionate about food, wearing large smiles and ready and waiting to feed you up – prepare yourself for early drinking as the Sparrow Gin cocktails are not to be missed.

Most are faithful regulars and one or two stalls vary from week to week. The market will be moving undercover as the wetter/cooler weather kicks in. The Cornish Grill take pre-orders for floral salads, veg and lovely meaty bits (try the lamb shanks) Pre-order your groceries for pick up here or just rock up on the day to dig into their weekly specials often on the BBQ.

Tips: Hidden just a stones throw away on the edge of Tower Bridge road are vintage clothes, bikes, antiques and some rather delicious home baked goods. Wander through whilst slowly digesting and if you want to continue on into the evening – head to Bermondsey Street, one of my all time favourite streets for a winding line of rather lovely shops and restaurants.

Bermondsey Street Favourites:

  • JoseTapas at it’s best
  • The Garrison – perfect for ‘ladies what lunch’ – a rustic and romantic gastro pub hosting Sunday film nights in the snug below
  • Zucca– Sleek, modern Italian. Worth a visit purely for the pumpkin tempura
  • The Stock MKT – Street food night market
